Review Section
Hello! Welcome to the Review Section! “What review?” You might ask. Well, anything that I want to write honestly. It could be films (movie or series), novels, video games, or even something else entirely. This is my hobby blog that I just created for fun and to help me train my writing skills, so it could improve or at least isn’t deteriorating. How good am I at writing reviews? Well, I can’t really say, but I am an English Literature graduate, so you could be assured that I, at least, know some of what I am talking about.
The format of
the reviews would be very relaxed and laid back, so I could talk about everything
I want about things I reviewed. This is, after all, just a hobby, and I think
making it strictly formal and professional would make it too stressful and boring
for me. However, that doesn’t mean my review would just consist of me rambling on
and about, at least I hope not. I would still arrange my paragraphs in a cohesive
structure to help you understand my point. The arguments that I use would
mostly be based on literary theory, more specifically, literary elements.
In case you didn’t know what those are: plot, setting, characterization, vocalization
(commonly known as Point of View), and theme.
While we’re
still on the formal/academic topic, let’s talk about how my scoring works and what
the score represents. As I said before, the arguments will be based on the
knowledge I have and the interpretation I made in regards to the said works. I
will try to make it clear which things they did I consider negative and which
ones I consider positive, or in case an element has both, I will try to divide what
I think was a good thing and what wasn’t. Then I will provide a final score at
the bottom and my justification for giving the said score, and no, it wasn’t necessarily
based on the accumulation of positive or negative. It wasn’t completely arbitrary
either. How I decided the final score is, first and foremost, what the movie is trying to achieve and whether it achieves that or not. Then I will consider
what things they excelled in and what flaws I think ruin the work the most.
Then I will consider other situational aspects, like did they have the flaws because
it’s an adaptation so they have a time constraint, they need the flaws to get
their point across, the flaws are actually inevitable or deliberate sacrifice,
maybe they did something so hard but they managed to excel in it, etc. I know
the last point was really dependent a lot on how I interpret the work subjectively,
which is fine. Objectivity is, after all, an agreed subjectivity. If you disagree
with some of my subjective arguments, that is totally fine. Of course, this also
implied that I might give a score based on personal reasons. The last thing I will
consider before making my score is whether or not I will recommend the movie,
meaning that whether or not I think you will enjoy the movie, or “you probably
won’t like it, but there is something special in this movie”, etc. Then I’ll
give the score on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the worst.
Lastly, what does the score mean? Well, here is the rundown.
1-4: I hate these
works, and this is just the degree how much I hate it, from 1 (the worst) to 4
(still horrible).
5-6: There was
a major flaw in this work, or the execution wasn’t that good, so much that it
disrupted the whole work.
7-8: The works
were generally good or just enjoyable. It might have major flaws, but not that
disruptive for the work, or there are clear things they could do better to
improve. But enjoyable nonetheless.
9: A good
piece of work that was almost perfect but had important (usually thematic)
flaws that it would be perfect, or just for work that I am not ready to give 10
just yet, for subjective reasons (which I will explain, of course).
10: It’s a great
work. Not a perfect one, mind you, nothing is. But the work will give you fulfillment, or they set a goal and they achieve it astoundingly. I could also bump a
work to this score if they did something that was not necessarily revolutionary
or everyone liked, but I like it nonetheless.
I
think that was all I wanted to talk about in this blog introduction. If you need
to ask about anything, don’t hesitate to contact me or comment. Lastly, I
hope you enjoy my writings and they could help you in any way.
